Lee Nak-yon, member of the Democratic Party of Korea visited an apartment in Jeongnim-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, which suffered from flood damage on July 31st and said, "If the central government has anything to help, I will play a middle role in recovering the damage,“
Lee, who visited the site in the afternoon, said, "I would like to pray for the souls of those who were victimized by torrential rains and express my condolences to my family,"
"We also offer our deepest condolences to the suffering of the victims," he said. "We hope the mayor and the head of the district office will help the victims quickly return to their daily lives as soon as possible,"
Regarding the volunteers who are helping recover from the damage, Lee also said, "I thank the residents for volunteering together and sharing the pain whenever this happens.“
More than 300 volunteers from all walks of life, including Daejeon City and Seo-gu District Office, Red Cross Service, Saemaul Branch, Seo-gu Council of Daejeon, Right Living Committee, Disaster Relief Association, 505 Brigade, and Seo-gu Fire Department, are helping the victims.
The flood-stricken apartment was flooded with parking lots and other floors due to heavy rain of about 80 millimeters per hour on July 30.
At the time, 152 people in the apartment were rescued, but in the process, a man in his 50s was found collapsed and transported on the front porch of the first floor, but eventually died and a woman in her 60s was hospitalized after complaining of dizziness.
In addition, 78 vehicles were found to have been flooded, and the total amount of property damage is being determined.
